LAUREN & THE LSK FOUNDATION

I remember the first time I met Lo, I remember her warmth, countenance, her sweet voice and joyful spirit. The beauty that resided inside her was what I wanted to draw out of her, more than her physical beauty.

We chatted throughout the shoot and she chatted very openly about her accident - the emotional and physical pain.

Since that day I have watched her create the LSK Foundation. To help support others who have lost limbs, she is advocating for others and raising money through the LSK Foundation. In America, majorities of insurance do not cover their prosthetic needs because they were considered a luxury.

I'm challenged by Lo, I'm challenged by her courage, her grace, her positivity and her faith. I keep thinking would I respond, in the same way? Would I be so tenacious to adapt my life the same way to prior to my accident? Would I be bitter or angry towards God? Would my faith increase?

She has walked through the fire and come out as gold, she is inspiring and encouraging others along with showing and excemplifying Jesus in all she is doing.

She inspires me to want to love harder, give more, and know Jesus more.

Whats your name and what do you do and where do you live?

My name is Lauren Scruggs Kennedy, and I live in Los Angeles.

Favourite things about your life?

I love being married to my best friend, and I am so grateful that I have a close family, the sweetest baby niece, and a solid community around us here in the city and across the country! I also love integrating my blog, our recently launched dry shampoo, Stranded, and the LSK Foundation. It has been so fun to see how they all work together!

Fun Fact about you?

I am a twin, addicted to gum, and grew up water skiing! The water is my happy place.

What made you start the LSK foundation?

I lost my arm in an accident almost 6 years ago, and I received a few prosthetic arms shortly after. They are such good quality, so beautifully crafted, and very realistic looking, leading me to find out that the recommendation we received regarding a prosthetist was the best of the best. Advanced Arm Dynamics and Artech soon felt like home. The Lord used the physical gift of a prosthetic arm to bring an extra dose of healing, confidence, and acceptance.

I started meeting girls and women who were missing limbs soon after I had received my arms, and many would share their stories of how insurance would not pay for their prosthetic needs because they were considered a luxury! My heart dropped, and I started praying through how I could help make a change. Some women I met had arms that were falling apart and could not afford a new one, one woman was trying to decide whether to save for a new arm or inVitro, and another friend who lost all four limbs was fighting her insurance for all they would provide - hooks for her arms!

Within about a year after I started praying, I met my dear friends, Lisa and Ashley, who shared the same vision and burden, and we started working together to make LSKF a reality!

How has your accident brought you closer to God?

It created in me such a deeper dependence on Jesus, and I saw the reality of His provision like I never had before - whether it was a Scripture that spoke to my heart on a tough day to a woman encouraging me at the grocery store, it was so real and tangible how He brought comfort in the most unexpected ways!

I also starting seeing the gospel with a new perspective, realizing that Jesus suffered to bring us life! He understands pain and difficulty more than any of us, and He is the best person to find comfort in!

I also realized that a trial of any kind truly is a gift, and I pray to walk confidentially in the story God has given me, even though it's not always easy! God is incredibly good and purposeful in the pain. Truly.

What scriptures helped you through your accident?

1 Peter 3, Isaiah 40: 28-31, The Psalms

What have you learnt through this process?

So much! I have come to grasp a true definition of beauty - it is so heart-based. Physical appearance can change in a few seconds or it will inevitably change over a span of time. It is nothing to hold so much value in! Our character, self-awareness, faith, relationships, and how we love others is what matters!

Whats the most rewarding part of the LSK foundation for you?

We are about to start providing for our first girls! It is such a deep feeling of joy to be able to walk through these moments of loss with these precious women and hopefully help to bring hope into their healing journey and lives! It is such a confirmation that the Lord uses everything for good. The fact that my experience can help someone else makes it all worth it!

Whats the vision for the LSK Foundation? What would you like to see in five years time?

We exist to bring hope, restore dignity, and ignite faith in girls and women with limb loss by providing beautiful cosmetic coverings for prostheses. We are so excited to provide good quality skin coverings for prosthetic arms and legs, while walking through the whole prosthetic process with these women. We want to help them not feel alone in their journey!

We hope to provide for more women as time goes on, bring awareness to the struggle of prosthetic coverage through insurance, and we aim to encourage women to boldly be who they are, through their scars and all!

How has your faith increased throughout your business and charity ventures?

I try to always remind myself that the Lord has me in these business ventures and this charity for a bigger purpose than what I may see. His guidance to each was so clear, and He is growing my character, awareness, and faith through it all. With LSKF in particular, we pray through each application and are confident in how the Lord will bring donations so we can provide for these precious women.

How do you feel God has used you throughout this process?

I hope my story and experience have helped people feel like they are not alone in their own journey! No matter what someone's trial is, pain is pain, and I truly believe every story can bring hope to another. I also feel like Jesus has used my story to help create a community of women who have lost or are missing limbs. It has been a joy to develop these friendships and encourage each other in limb loss!
